Ilaje comes from the phrase Ule Aje which means a land of plentiful; land of Aje (wealth; the god of wealth and the ocean).
The ilaje is a people from ule ufe. This is what shaped Ilaje uniqueness among their brethren. Ilaje are migratory people of the creeks & coastline deltas. Ilaje culture & dressing reflect from both sides. Ilaje territory is a meeting point between Yoruba, the Benin, and the coastline deltas.
Ilaje names are 97% understood by Western Yoruba but have no meaning in the Benin language. Omasuwa, Adesuwa, Obasuwa, etc are Ilaje names. There are many similar words due to interaction, shared territory, and proximity with all their neighbours. The Ilaje tone is a mix of both Yoruba and Benin but the language is different from Benin and is considered a dialect of the Yoruba people who traced their ancestry to Ile Ife. Ilaje traditional dressing reflects Ife and Benin because some ilaje people have their ancestry in the Benin empire.
